This air-fryer riff on the Chinese takeout classic saves the day with nearly half the saturated fat of restaurant versions and loads less clean-up than deep frying at home. Air fryer sizes vary (hence the cook time’s wide range); if you have a smaller air fryer, commit to cooking in batches so that there’s plenty of room for the air to circulate and crisp up the chicken.
Hi! I’m Cathy. I’ve escaped from a peculiar Northern California college town that built an underground tunnel to save toads from the potentials of vehicular frog-slaughter. I now live in Mcminnville, Oregon where my husband and I have planted a vineyard, started a winery and make wine in the heart of Oregon wine country. I love mayonnaise, butter and Jewish men. Barry, Jerry and Larry come to mind. Gluttony is my sin of choice. Welcome to my weird and wonderful world.

Air frying is much more similar to baking in an oven than deep frying. And although most air fryers say you can cook without any oil at all, we found the best results with a tablespoon of vegetable oil. Even then, our top picks produced food that tasted closer to baked fries and chicken than deep-fried food. Instead of the comforting crunch of a fry, we were met with a tough, sometimes chewy exterior. We found the air-fried insides were thicker and more substantial than the almost puffy, creamy texture one gets from a traditional fryer. The chicken strips most closely imitated the deep-fried, crispy texture we were looking for. For a more detailed breakdown, check out our article comparing deep fryers vs. air fryers.
What if our top-rated toaster oven added the ability to air fry? Well, you'd get the Breville Smart Oven Air. You will pay top dollar for this handsome hunk of brushed stainless-steel, but you'll get the performance you'd expect to come along with it. In air fryer mode, it consistently turned out crispy food and chicken nuggets that tasted fried. It also sports intuitive and accurate digital controls (sorely missing on the Philips and Krups), along with automatic preheat and a bright oven light.
Cooking aficionados, behold! The Philips XL Airfryer is the perfect kitchen companion for anybody who likes cooking up a storm for their family and friends. This Gordon Ramsay approved air fryer has a large capacity basket that holds up to 2.65 lbs. of food, a perfect if you have a family of 4. Not only is it capable of frying food, but also grilling, roasting, steaming, and baking. Here are some of the features:
For a price hovering around $100, you definitely get what you pay for.  The accessories are fairly limited but the cooking experience is one of the best we’ve seen, and at the end of the day, that’s the most important factor.  Compared to the following mentioned Phillips model, it’s more than 3 times cheaper and offers the same, if not better cooking ability.  For this reason it deserves to be the best air fryer we have reviewed thus far.

It is a multifunctional appliance which you can use instead of your oven, deep oil fryer, pans, convection oven, and others. This model can fry, steam, bake, and roast and grill various foods for you. This limits the energy consumption from needing to use all kinds of other appliance for cooking food and also ensures that you don’t consume too much unhealthy oil with the meals you prepare. It also limits the mess of using too many utensils and having oil splatters around the kitchen.

The truth is that an air fryer will handle typical fried foods pretty poorly. "The only food that'll come out the same is a french fry," Mims says. "It doesn’t work well with traditionally fried foods that have a wet batter. Things like chicken wings or fish fingers, or schnitzel, those all have to be adapted to the machine. They should be dry-coated with breadcrumbs, or cornmeal, or spices and herbs to get a get a crisp texture."

Even if you are satisfied with the air fryer’s facsimile of fried flavor and texture, and you’re eager to eat as many almost-fried foods as possible, most air fryers can’t give you consistent results. While they tend to excel at cooking frozen foods, many models struggle to cook fresh veggies, potatoes and meat evenly without leaving burnt or raw spots. A smaller model of our top pick for air fryers, the Philips Airfryer XXL, produced dry, unevenly cooked french fries that couldn’t compare to their deep-fried counterparts.
During a four-day period, I unleashed the machine on all of my fried favorites. Panko-coated shrimp and onion rings were crunchy, albeit lean tasting, an issue remedied by a dipping sauce. “Fried” Brussels sprout leaves were phenomenal with just a whisper of oil. Chicken wings and tofu developed terrific crispy exteriors. My large machine’s five racks allowed for air-frying zucchini sticks and eggplant rounds while roasting slabs of cauliflower at the same time. Pretty efficient multitasking, if you ask me.
Buyer beware! Bought this oven from television, called number on screen. Telephone operator was polite and did her job well. When oven came shipping included of course I was surprised to find out that the insides were plastic, really we all know that is rediculous! Called for return info. NO return shipping included. It cost me 80.00 dollars to return! So would not have ordered had I known. The accessories seemed very cheap as well. Still licking my wounds on this one.
Cooking Options: Always ensure that the Air Fryer you are going to purchase can perform all the types of cooking like grilling, roasting, baking etc. A good Air Fryer always comes with multiple cooking options. It saves your money from buying different cooking devices. There is no need to buy some other device when you can purchase a single device that can perform all the cooking functions by itself.
Deep fryers require diligent maintenance. A deep fryer remains too hot to handle for several hours after use. As such, it’s a challenge to perform important tasks like oil filtering. Working with large amounts of animal-based fat is also a messy and thankless job for many cooks. There is also the problem of having a large container of scalding hot oil within reach of small children.
I got the Culinary’s Edge Air Fryer as a Christmas gift. I believe that it is good and sounds and looks eerily similar to the GoWise fryer with the warping drawer of the Power Fryer XL, that gets hot and won’t go back in until it cools. It has no accessories and you need to stop it and flip over the food for even browning, but there is where the problem comes in, because the drawer won’t go back in or even register right away. It should beep or turn on when the drawer is placed back in. Unfortunately it becomes a tug of war during that time. It’s really annoying and adds more cooking time, because you have to wait for it to behave.

“Our friends have been raving about air fryers for the longest time. We were always intrigued, but never went through with the purchase. Well, we finally gave in … If you’re going to eat fried- or crispy-type foods anyway, might as well make it healthier, no? This thing is convenient, quick, easy-to-use! You get crispy, delicious foods with less guilt than you normally would. We’ve done the fried frozen foods, and raw wings, chops, and Thai ribs. EVERYTHING TASTES SO. DARN. GOOD. We haven’t quite perfected sweet-potato fries yet, but we’ll get there soon. Sometimes the presets are good, sometimes not so good. If it’s not to our liking, we just add more or adjust the next time — it’s not too bad.”
- Vents very hot air out the back, which I'd forgotten, and one night noticed one of my blinds was drooping and quickly realized it was because I had the fryer too close to the wall. I was able to bend the blind back into shape, well mostly straight anyways. LOL! Now I just make sure I pull the fryer out to the edge of the counter and have had no issues since.

Me too! The rotisserie cannot handle a 4 pound chicken or anything close. Even tied to the nines, there is virtually no clearance between the meat on the rotisserie and the drip pan. Same goes for the skewers. There is less than 1/2 inch clearance between the ingredients on the rotating skewers, and the drip pan, and so they rub against the bottom and cause things to slow down. It is a very bad design, although the concept is great. The interior (black) is nearly impossible to see into to place racks, rotisserie baskets, etc. and at counter level, you need a flashlight to see what you are doing and use your free hand to try to manipulate the food! Also, the door is just a removable hinged affair, very easy to fall off, while removing for cleaning. Like I said, great idea, but very poorly executed. Don't fall for all of those late night infomercials! Despite what the food looks like in their commercials, it just doesn't live up to them!
The fry basket is what you put the actual food in. This is almost always removable, and tends to have a handle on it to easily transfer food from the fryer to the plate. Many times, the basket is also dishwasher safe, to make cleanup easier. Fry baskets may have an accessory like an extra shelf, to increase the space available for cooking flat items.
As someone that has avoided a deep fryer all of her years – yes, even for my doughnuts chapter in my cookbook I used a large, deep frying pan- I really wanted to try an Airfryer out. The secret to the healthy frying is that the Phillips Airfryer uses their proprietary Rapid Air Technology. Thanks to this technology, the airfryer fries, bakes, roasts and grills with little to no oil, making it a perfect solution for fast, tasty and healthy meals and snacks.
There are a handful of different air fryers on the market ranging from $70 to $200. I used the Gourmia GTA2500 model for the testing. When I opened the box, the amount of parts and accessories involved was a little overwhelming. It took a while to sort through everything and figure out what parts I actually needed and what was superfluous. Once assembled, the air fryer literally looked like a mini spaceship. Rather bulky and dome-like, I’m not entirely sure how I’d feel about having this live on my kitchen countertop—but I digress. I ended up using only the cooking rack and fry basket for the air fryer.
This model has received positive reviews on Amazon. The first model comes with a bonus cookbook. This helps you to try out different dishes! After all, variety is the spice of life. Say “no” to deep-fried delicacies because you can cook food without a single drop of oil in this revolutionary domestic device. Whether it is onion rings, fish fingers or Kentucky chicken, you can make anything in this appliance!
CR’s take: The least expensive model in our tests, the Bella Hot Air Fryer 14538 has a capacity of only 2.5 quarts and has no preprogrammed settings. Its mechanical controls are easy to set and read, earning it a rating of Very Good in this test, but you’ll hear the appliance’s fan and the tick of its timer. The Bella is easy to clean, and the two-year warranty is generous, given the relatively low price.

Wings can be make easily in any air fryer simply by tossing dried wings in potato starch flour, spritzing with oil ( you can omit this if you want ) and cooking on the chicken setting. I will shake the basket every 10min. In the oven I believe you are supposed to rotate the racks every 10 min. I also do wings by taking damp wings and shaking them in a bag with seasoned coating like you would find in the store. This method will give you a bit more of a breading. Wings take approx 25 to 30 min to cook. I just keep an eye on them. You can tell when they are done. I like sauced wings so will take my wings, coat with sauce of choice and then put them under the broiler for about 4 minutes to set the sauce. If making buffalo style I don’t put those under the broiler I just toss in the sauce. Hope this helps. Ps, I get my potato starch flour on Amazon. It lasts a long time.
We started by compiling a list of popular brand names and models, drawing from retailer websites and online best-of sources. First and foremost, we were looking for products that were ETL certified. This certification shows that the product has been tested and approved in accordance with national safety standards determined by the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration and is safe for home use. We also looked for fryers that could cook enough food for an average family — roughly 2 pounds.
Our own testing agrees with other users experience.  We first put in frozen chips and set it to what was recommended in the cookbook.  They came out well cooked and crispy.  Next we threw in some chicken drumsticks – 4 in total – and found the top and bottom to be more brown than the sides.  Note that we were testing the larger 5 L model, but the results can be applied to the smaller capacity version as well.
When it comes to the “latest and greatest” kitchen gadgets, I’ll be the first to admit I have some baggage. A few years ago, my brother nearly ruined Christmas dinner by using an “As Seen On TV” infrared oven (a gimmicky predecessor to the air fryer) to “re-fry” my mom’s Vietnamese imperial rolls. Not only did it take forever, but the rice paper wrappers emerged from the “miracle machine” with an extremely unappetizing plastic-like texture. It was a grim meal that my mother has never let him forget.
Overall, this air fryer is an excellent pick for anyone looking to get a quality analog appliance that does a fine cooking job.  We do find it to be slightly expensive considering the limited accessories that come with the unit.  However; if you’re happy to fork over the cost then we highly recommend this little cooker.  One more thing…it’s endorsed by Gordan Ramsay.

Companies that sell air fryers claim that they are a more healthful option because they use less oil than traditional deep fryers, which is true. But since air fryers are a form of convection baking, these companies are comparing apples to oranges. To demonstrate, we tried cooking traditional buttermilk-battered chicken—which would normally be shallow or deep fried—in an air fryer, and the results were disastrous. The chicken was cooked through, but sections of the batter were overcooked, while other areas had globs of raw wet flour. The lesson here is that battered foods need to be submerged (or partially submerged and flipped) in oil for even browning and texture. The mediocre food we prepared in an air fryer only left us pining for real honest-to-goodness fried food made the old-fashioned way.
Furthermore you don’t get many accessories with this model and the grated basket is the toll you have to hold the food.  Whilst perfect for chips and most solid foods, foods that use marination or are more liquid will seep through the bass.  An easy fix is to use an paper plate or something that is solid to retain the liquid.  If you plan to bake or cook liquids or semi liquid ingredients, it is recommended that you buy the baking pan which comes as a one of the many available accessories.

If you’re looking for the best cooking ability, then the Black and Decker or either Phillips HD9240/94 or Phillips HD9220/28 are your the best picks.  Their cooking ability is a step up from the rest of the competition.  The Black and Decker is significantly less expensive and provides the best bang for your buck, but if cost isn’t an issue, then the Phillips models will also serve you well.
Add half of your cauliflower to air fryer (no need to oil the basket). Cook for 12-14 minutes, shaking halfway, or until you reach desired consistency. Repeat with remaining cauliflower, except lower cook time to 9-10 minutes. Cauliflower will keep tightly sealed in the refrigerator up to 4 days. To reheat, add back to air fryer for 1-2 minutes, until warmed through and slightly crispy.
The exhaust system also regulates temperature increases created by internal pressure by emitting extra air if needed. Before being released into the environment, the extra air goes through a filter which removes odors. Once your food is ready, the internal heating elements are cooled down with fresh air passed through these filters by the built-in cooling system.
Well, needless to say, they got me twice. The first unit I had already paid for, so I just donated it. I thought this one would be different since it has a different body style. I have tried to roast a chicken twice and neither time did it work. The first one cooked on 375, the second was cooked on 400, and the second one it took almost 2 hours until I just stopped and put it in the oven because the dark meat wasn’t done. I was given a 90-day return and of course, they are saying only 60 days, which is not what I was given when I was convinced to try the new model. You would think if they really stood by their product, they would have made an exception since this was my second unit and it has not been a full 90 days. Which means that I am about 15 days past 30 days. And I never got the Walmart gift card for ordering either.

If you’re OK with an air fryer taking up a lot of space, than the Philips XL comes with our recommendation.  With a price exceeding the $200 mark, it is a fairly expensive piece of equipment but it does cook food to a very high standard and is well built and usable.  Included in this price is a free app and recipe book with more than 150 recipes.  You’ll also have the option of purchasing a grill pan and double layer rack with skewers as additional cooking accessories.
Cool exterior: One of the many complaints with air fryers is the chance of overheating and blowing out hot steam, but one of the reasons T-fal is so highly reviewed is because of how safe it is. Not only does it have a cool exterior for you to safely touch it if needed, it also doesn’t blow out hot steam like other air fryers, making it a top choice for families with small children.
I ordered the elite model and the two round bonus pans, which came under a separate order. When I got the air fryer, I read the manual which states you CANNOT reheat liquids in it. I called the customer number and they said it is primarily an air fryer and not meant for microwaving. I argued that was deceptive advertising and if it could not replace my microwave, I wanted to send it back. They offered to reduce the price by $40 if I kept it, which I refused because it was not as advertised.
