Considering a price tag of less than $100 we can definitely see a couple of trade-offs as a result of keeping the price as low as possible.  There is no digital display, making everything a tad bit harder and less accurate to use.  Expectantly, the design comes with the classic issue of accidentally setting the timer too long and not being able to dial it back.
The NuWave Brio air fried more evenly than most from one end of the basket to the other. Also, this machine adds a level of multitasking and ease of use that sets it apart. The Brio can air fry, bake, roast, broil, toast and grill right out of the box, and it has a smart interface and a compact design. Cleaning the wire basket is a little bit of a pain, but the level of crispiness was worth it.

I see most people on here say they have had theirs for a couple of months before the fan failed. My wife and I had ours for only a week. We tried to return it back to the vender that sold it to us, my wife lost the receipt and the wouldn't take it back even though that was the only one they had in stock and they knew who she was. $159 + tax $171.00 down the drain. The oven was poorly made and I think that was on purpose and guaranteed to break down just to take your money. If you look up parts for this thing you can't find them. The so-called company is a total sham.
Overall, this model does everything to a decent standard, except for the aforementioned design flaw.  Although there is a work-around, it is something that you wouldn’t expect to be an issue at this price point.  If you need the power, digital screen and accessories then by all means this model could be for you, but there are definitely better choices further up this list.

A few months back, I went to a kitchen appliance trade show and was surprised by the large number of manufacturers coming out with air fryers. "Enjoy great tasting fried food"[sic] reads the cover recipe booklet for Philip's new Airfryer XXL, a lovely sounding idea. With their focus on faux fried flavor, an aversion to fat, and an emphasis on convenience in the marketing from almost every manufacturer, the rise of air fryers felt like the second coming of the George Foreman Grill.

Let us have a look at the problems of the users with the machine. One person compared the air fryer with the toaster oven because it bakes the food rather than fries. Another one mentioned that this tool could not feed the whole family – it can only prepare food for the two or three people. Some say that it takes much longer time to cook than mentioned in the instructions.

Furthermore you don’t get many accessories with this model and the grated basket is the toll you have to hold the food.  Whilst perfect for chips and most solid foods, foods that use marination or are more liquid will seep through the bass.  An easy fix is to use an paper plate or something that is solid to retain the liquid.  If you plan to bake or cook liquids or semi liquid ingredients, it is recommended that you buy the baking pan which comes as a one of the many available accessories.
The egg-shaped Black + Decker 2L Purifry is not all that much smaller in size than other air fryers but has a much smaller basket. B + D only recommends that you cook a half pound of fries or one burger at a time. While it gives good results, it seems like if you’re dedicating so much counter space to an appliance, you should be able to cook enough food for four at once. Plus, the basket didn’t glide in and out easily. Like many, it doesn’t have digital controls so it’s hard to set precisely. But our biggest complaint is that the numbers are so small that we literally needed to use a magnifying glass to set the temperature. Finish available in black and white.
During a four-day period, I unleashed the machine on all of my fried favorites. Panko-coated shrimp and onion rings were crunchy, albeit lean tasting, an issue remedied by a dipping sauce. “Fried” Brussels sprout leaves were phenomenal with just a whisper of oil. Chicken wings and tofu developed terrific crispy exteriors. My large machine’s five racks allowed for air-frying zucchini sticks and eggplant rounds while roasting slabs of cauliflower at the same time. Pretty efficient multitasking, if you ask me.
If you don’t have experience with an air fryer but are willing to give it a try, the GoWISE USA 3.7 could be the best one, to begin with. First of all, it is very easy to use thanks to the intuitive display and the 8 convenient pre-installed cooking programs. Also, it is sold with a detailed recipe book to get you started and try out the wide variety of options this wonderful kitchen appliance offers.
While all three specimens were reminiscent of special treats mom would make for my sister and me when we were kids and she didn't want to cook, they were in no way as good as real French fries. If a perfect paper cone full of Belgian fries eaten on a Brussels sidewalk is a 10 and excellent fries at your favorite bar are a seven, then the oven fries were a two, the convection oven version was a two point five and the air fryer a three. With a bit of tweaking, like preheating the sheet pan for the oven version, I guessed I could bring each of those home-cooked numbers up a point, but none of the fries I'd made were terribly compelling.
And not only did I think we were not going to use it, I especially did not want another “thing” on my kitchen counter. Extra stuff on my kitchen counters is really one of my pet peeves. I really despise anything being dumped on them, whether it’s mail, car keys, computers…take them to your room and keep them there! But that’s a rant for another day.
You get many extras with this unit, including a baking pan and muffin cups so you can make desserts in addition to snacks and meats. There are also additional racks to facilitate roasting and grilling. Since the Brio is much more compact than your oven, and most toaster ovens, it can do all of these tasks very quickly, albeit in limited quantities.
Some drawbacks to this machine are that it is loud and very smoky. All of the fryers produced more smoke than we expected, but this one was the worst for that. It was also tough to clean. This was one of few that had a cooking basket made of wire, like hot-oil fryers. That means there are lots of tiny grooves to get clean. The denser metal baskets on competing air fryers had larger openings that didn’t trap food as much. We pre-soaked the Philips basket, but it still took some effort to get it totally clean. At least you have the option of throwing it in the dishwasher.

Classic pub fare like fish and chips can be a real grease-fest, but not when your air fryer’s invited to the party. “Would give ten stars if possible. This product is amazing. I was skeptical about the whole air-fryer process, but it truly works. It is so easy and makes a ton of different things! I have made frozen French fries, fried chicken, and even monkey bread. And every item came out perfectly. You do have to watch the items closely the first time you use it to get an accurate time frame, but once you have it down, you are good to go. And the cleanup is the best part. No mess, no oil! Definitely recommend this item to everyone.”
An appliance I wish I had bought a long time ago! Discovered even one tablespoon of oil was too much to make really crispy french fries. Appreciate not having to deal with a pot of frying oil, as well as the calories I didn't take in because mine were air fried. Only thing I would hope for is an accessory second shelf such as the one Philip's makes for their model. The photo I've uploaded is the remainder of fries after my husband and I had our generous portions.
While many of the air fryers we tested had some great features, the NuWave Brio combined the most of those features into one appliance to outshine the competition. The Brio was able to churn out batch after batch of crispy fries and chicken wings during our tests. The final results were almost perfect. There were just a few spots that were a little lighter or darker, depending on the batch, but this air fryer was impressive for its consistently crispy and evenly cooked results overall.
I'm Ashley Clarke Thompson. And I'm Ry Crist. And we're here at the CNET applicanes office to talk about what has been on our mind and in our stomachs for the past two weeks. Which is air fryers. Yeah, so air fryers, the thing you have to understand about these things, is that they aren't really frying anything. It's just blowing hot air over your food in this kind of small, contained space and that makes them sort of a small, counter top, convection oven And nothing that you cook in them is gonna be much different than what you get out of a convection oven. It's just kind of a different way of doing it. And you know, it has good marketing. It's all about, like you can fry up foods healthier, you know? But at the end of the day, we really weren't Too impressed with most of these. Yeah, I mean, it's the same difference between frying and air frying as frying and baking. If I just put a bunch of frozen french fries out on a baking sheet and baked them, I'm not using oil, I'm not deep frying them in their own juices or anything. It's just going to be what we get out of an air fryer. Which is just this, golden brown, kind of crispy, kind of dry. Frozen fries. And these are perfectly reheated, these are snackable. I enjoy these fries, it's fine. But a lot of these new fryers cost $200, $300 and that just feel absolutely ridiculous. I wouldn't spend more than a $100 for a Unitasker like this that's just heating up frozen stuff. You know, I honestly couldn't especially for the more expensive fryers that we tested. I mean, some of them the MSRP is $300. Which for me was a lot of money for something that essentially does one thing really well. I mean, as somebody who tests small appliances, I think you would be better off with a toaster oven. It can do the same thing, especially if it has convection in the toaster oven, and it can toast, which these cannot. Yeah, thank you for talking while I was chewing by the way. Now it's my turn. Your turn, yeah. The one that we have here, the Simple Chef, is just 70 bucks. So it's the cheapest we tested. Did a fine job with fries, did the cheese sticks and pizza rolls and frozen snack tests pretty well Didn't do great with fresh fries, and burgers, and chicken wings. It was okay. But again, nothing better than you'd get out of your oven. So if you understand that you're not getting a special cooking appliance that's gonna unlock some new recipes and really just Convenient oven for your counter top, I think this one is fine. But I wouldn't spend much more than that. Yeah, I agree. I mean, if you have just some spare money and a love of pizza rolls and mozarella sticks then sure, 70 bucks, not too bad.
Unlike most models in this price category, it doesn’t have digital controls. While it’s not huge, it is taller than typical toaster ovens. It accommodates two pounds of fries, six slices of bread and according to Cuisinart, a four-pound chicken. If you love to toss everything in the dishwasher, be aware that all the parts need to cleaned by hand. But unless you already have a toaster oven that you love, the Cuisinart is a worth considering for its versatility.
We’re sad to say that after more than 35 hours researching and testing air fryers, we don’t recommend them for most people. The air fryers we tried didn’t cook food better than a regular convection oven or convection toaster oven. Though we were genuinely excited to test air fryers, we think they’re far too expensive for what they give you. However, if you’re determined to get an air fryer, the Philips HD9641/96 Airfryer was the best of the models we tested—but we still don’t recommend it.
From the reviews, we noticed many consumers were not using their air fryers on a regular basis. Even though it's an air fryer, it creates grease during the cooking process. People would get a messy surprise when opening their air fryer after not using it for some time. This often happened due to the difficulty of cleaning the areas where grease accumulates.
Once the chicken was in the fry basket, I simply hit the “fry” button which set the air fryer at a temperature of 390°F for 30 minutes. The setting seemed accurate to me, so I didn’t adjust it. I started with the unbreaded and let it run the full 30 minutes. For the oven, I lined a sheet pan with foil and placed a rack over the foil. I baked the chicken on the rack, putting it in the oven at the same time as I set the air fryer. The air fryer works on a timer and shuts off when the food is done, decreasing the potential to burn the food or overcook your food. When the air stops circulating in the air fryer, the cooking process stops, unlike a hot oven that has recently been turned off—food left in the warm oven will continue to cook.

Would not recommend this product. The basket is VERY hard to get in and out. Purchased one and returned it for that reason and got a new one, this one worked for a bit but started having the same problem. Then the outside part of the basket broke off, making it impossible for the unit to turn on without holding the basket in place. Have had for 9 months and the company will not replace the basket outside part and told me I would need to buy another one instead. Very very disappointing.

It arrived in the morning and, lacking other options in my fridge and pantry, I made baked potatoes for my wife Elisabeth and myself. Pulling the air fryer out of the box, three things became immediately apparent. First, these things take up a lot of counter space—pretty much the footprint of a five-gallon bucket, and two-thirds the height. (Other brands might be smaller but not that much.) Second, the fan that that runs whenever it's on is loud, effectively sucking the conversation or ambient music right up into the ether. The third thing was how ridiculously tiny the cooking basket is; at nine inches by nine inches by two and three-quarter inches high, two large potatoes effectively maxed out its capacity.
