If you’ve been fighting the temptation of fried chicken for the sake of your healthy diet, you can finally indulge guilt free. This spicy, crispy chicken emerges from the air fryer with all the flavor and crunch you’ve been craving. For the best flavor, be sure to let the chicken marinate as instructed—if you have the time, go the full 12 hours. The results are worth it.
Bring a pot of water to boil. Add the cut red potatoes and cook for no more than 6 minutes. Immediately remove the potatoes from the water using a strainer and place them on a kitchen towel to cool and to pat dry. Once the potatoes have cooled to about room temperature (about 15 minutes), ensure they are “dry” then add them to a large bowl along with avocado oil, garlic powder and sea salt and pepper. Coat the potatoes then add them to an air-fryer basket, preferably in batches, so not to overcrowd the basket which can lead to inadequate “frying.” Food needs room to breathe.
As stated above, an air fryer is a kitchen appliance that uses hot air circulation to cook food placed in the removable tray. The device’s oversized cooking chamber can heat air up to 400 °F, allowing you to prepare a variety of foods using it. Heated air is then passed through the food by to the exhaust fan located above the cooking chamber. This way heat is evenly spread around the food. Temperature can be adjusted manually or automatically if you are using preset programs.
We can thank the dual convection fans that circulate hot air evenly around the food. The fact that it is also a relatively small unit at a 2 pound capacity – don’t expect to cook for more than 2 people – also contributes to each piece of food getting the ‘air-time’ it deserves. Worried that your food might get burnt when your not around? Black and Decker have solved this tanks to an auto shut-off feature that turns the machine off when the timer expires. Check out this cool video which compares this unit to the very popular (and more expensive) Phillips XL Airfryer – the results speak for themselves.
In our testing, it didn’t cook food as good as the Phillips XL or Black and Decker air fryers and this was especially the case when it came to fish. We cooked 3 pieces of salmon fillets and noticed everything was cooked but the sides were not as brown as the top or bottom. Nevertheless, the majority of food came our crispy and was cooked through. For the price, it definitely met our expectations.
All of that changed when I bit the bullet and purchased my air fryer. I’d seen air fryers touted on YouTube for several years, but I took it as a passing fad, like many (most) “unusual” kitchen gadgets. I was also skeptical—how could this little Wall-E looking machine recreate the texture of fried food, with hardly any oil, without the splatter war-wounds to show for it?
What an air fryer actually is is a small, super-powerful convection oven. Once I learned the way it operated, I took the plunge and bought one. And you’d be amazed at all the things you can prepare in this. Generally speaking, if you can cook it in your oven, you can cook it in an air fryer. Just remember that space is pretty limited so you can’t do sheet cakes or turkeys or stuff such as that.
Avalon provide a digital and analog version of the product. The core difference is that the digital comes with pre-programmed settings for cooking meat, fish or chicken and allows for greater control of the temperature and time. Although the analog model is the cheaper option, the trade-off is using dials that don’t provide as much precision as a digital display.
It's an oven, dehydrator, rotisserie, air fryer and can even do your taxes. Ok maybe not the taxes part. What I love about this unit is how easy it is to use. The settings allow you to do so much. It's spacious enough for a whole chicken, yet compact enough to have on your kitchen counter space. The dehydrator is perfect for making healthy fruit and veggie chips. The air fryer is great for french fries, fish sticks, and chicken nuggets without the guilt. You can even stick a whole chicken in it, set it, and it'll do it's thing. Cleaning is also a breeze where you can take out the racks and trays to wash separately. Love this great addition to any kitchen. * I am writing this review as part of a contest.
It is possible that you could make yours crunchier and less burnt by setting the Airfryer to a lower temperature and leaving it in for longer, but having tasted the few perfectly air-fried pieces in my batch, I'm not sure than any batch of air-fried raw vegetables could mirror the same taste or texture of the deep-fried, crunchy, melt-in-your-mouth kind.
