Overall, this air fryer is an excellent pick for anyone looking to get a quality analog appliance that does a fine cooking job.  We do find it to be slightly expensive considering the limited accessories that come with the unit.  However; if you’re happy to fork over the cost then we highly recommend this little cooker.  One more thing…it’s endorsed by Gordan Ramsay.
From there, I tried another recipe in the Philips recipe booklet: shrimp on lemongrass skewers with sweet potato fries. The idea is that you're supposed to cook it all in batches, a detail that subtly pops up on the very last line of the recipe. My estimate is that you'd have to do the fries in (at least) two batches, followed by the shrimp in two, turning it into 60 minutes of cooking time. Compare that to cooking the fries in the oven (there wasn't much difference in taste in the fries between the three methods), then blasting the shrimp under the broiler. Don't get me wrong, the results of all three methods for the shrimp were excellent, but the oven and broiler gave me more options and slightly superior results, and, thanks to the relatively luxurious amount of space in my oven, I could cook much more food in about half the time.
The air fryer is right on the coattails of the Instant Pot in terms of popularity with home cooks as an appliance that can “do it all.” So, what exactly is an air fryer? It’s essentially a compact convection oven that cooks your food at very high temperatures while circulating the dry air around with a built-in fan. It’s claim to fame is that it drastically reduces the amount of oil used during frying to achieve similarly crispy results. Given that these appliances can be quite pricey, I decided to test one out and see what all the hype was about. I tested with two variations of “fried chicken”— breaded and unbreaded. Both chicken variations were cooked in the air fryer and in a conventional convection oven. I wanted to find out if that hefty price tag was worthwhile, or if you should just stick to the oven.   
Companies that sell air fryers claim that they are a more healthful option because they use less oil than traditional deep fryers, which is true. But since air fryers are a form of convection baking, these companies are comparing apples to oranges. To demonstrate, we tried cooking traditional buttermilk-battered chicken—which would normally be shallow or deep fried—in an air fryer, and the results were disastrous. The chicken was cooked through, but sections of the batter were overcooked, while other areas had globs of raw wet flour. The lesson here is that battered foods need to be submerged (or partially submerged and flipped) in oil for even browning and texture. The mediocre food we prepared in an air fryer only left us pining for real honest-to-goodness fried food made the old-fashioned way.

Still following the same principles of using very little oil to make fried food creations, this model has a 3-pound capacity, meaning it can handle more food than your average air fryer. It is Air fryer Vs. Convection Oven, and we would give all the credits to the former appliance because it is portable, easy to clean and allows to cook prepare healthy food fast. We live in a world where people are prone to diseases like obesity. Obesity is a deadly disease because it causes other serious health risks such as heart diseases, diabetes, and arthritis. Similar to ribs, chicken wings can become part of your weeknight dinner possibilities thanks to their quick cooking time in the air fryer (only 20 minutes!). And when rubbed with baking powder and spices, they become super-duper crispy; just the thing for tossing with a flavorful sauce and serving over rice, all of which you’re able to do during the miraculously short time in which they're air-frying.
Deep fryers require diligent maintenance. A deep fryer remains too hot to handle for several hours after use. As such, it’s a challenge to perform important tasks like oil filtering. Working with large amounts of animal-based fat is also a messy and thankless job for many cooks. There is also the problem of having a large container of scalding hot oil within reach of small children.
- Vents very hot air out the back, which I'd forgotten, and one night noticed one of my blinds was drooping and quickly realized it was because I had the fryer too close to the wall. I was able to bend the blind back into shape, well mostly straight anyways. LOL! Now I just make sure I pull the fryer out to the edge of the counter and have had no issues since.
Avalon provide a digital and analog version of the product.  The core difference is that the digital comes with pre-programmed settings for cooking meat, fish or chicken and allows for greater control of the temperature and time.  Although the analog model is the cheaper option, the trade-off is using dials that don’t provide as much precision as a digital display.
Like the GoWISE model, the Avalon Bay Digital Air Fryer 220SS burned the fries closest to the heating element and left those on the bottom of the basket raw. The Avalon Bay model was one of the few that came with accessories in the box. But we found the included cake pan to be so small (it measures just 6 inches in diameter and 1 inch high) that it was virtually useless.
The pre-sets make the job all too easy and the included 14 recipe booklet is great for beginners.  However; the lack of accessories, such as pans or racks makes certain foods tricky to cook, and the grated basket, while great for draining oil, can be a bit of a pain when marinating or using liquid ingredients.  The good news is that it does come in a 3.7QT or 5.8QT variety so can pick which one suits you.
This past Spring I went to NYC for my cookbook tour, and I had the chance to eat at By Chloe, an excellent vegan fast-food chain that makes Air-Baked fries. I was HOOKED. These fries were light, crispy on the outside and potato-pillowy on the inside. I don’t know if By Chloe uses an Air Fryer, but I figured that whatever technique they do use couldn’t be far off, and I purchased this Phillips Air Fryer.

In terms of the design, it’s fairly generic and copies the egg shape of other air fryers.  It comes with a digital screen that has 7 pre-set programs for cooking different food items.  You can also adjust the timer and temperature if you wish and it should be noted that when the timer expires, it will automatically shut off the machine so your food won’t keep cooking.  Top this off with a cool to touch handle (this thing goes up to 400 °F!) and we have a safe and user-friendly air fryer.
The bottom of the Airfryer XL cooking chamber has fan-shaped grooves meant to distribute the airflow evenly. Our tests indicate that the design works – at least the food tests. Our temperature testing highlighted pretty big gaps in the temperature from one side to the other, but we were only testing surface temperatures, not the temperature of circulating air during the cooking process. Judging by the universal crispiness of every wing and french fry, this one does a practically perfect job of moving the air into every corner of the interior.
You MUST work quickly and likely will have to do this in batches.  Lightly spray a guacamole ball in olive oil to help them get “sticky,” then dip it in almond flour, then the egg mixture, then panko crumbs. Repeat ONLY until you have enough guacamole balls to fill the air fryer basket (while giving them ample space to breathe), then place the rest of the balls (without coating) back in the freezer.
These delights are lighter than traditional churros—almost like éclairs—coming out of the air fryer fluffy and delicious. The cinnamon-sugar mixture creates a thin crust on the outside, delivering that classic churro crunch. You'll want to enjoy these churros immediately, as they're best fresh, but you can save any extra chocolate sauce (try drizzling it over frozen yogurt).
Bought oven in June of this year, used about 4-5 times. Cooking French Fries on the french fry timer and the inside glass on the door shattered. Contacted Seller only to be treated like I did something wrong. Sent me a postage paid return label and I had to box up and take it to Fed Ex to return. Now they want me to sign a Release Form that basically relinquishes them for any wrong doings for the old oven as well as the new oven before they will send me a new oven that I already paid for. Totally Ridiculous! One step away from calling Better Business Bureau.
Next up is the Power Air Fryer XL, which boasts a 3.4 quart basket with a non-stick coating -- so your food should be easy to remove after cooking. This fryer features 7 preset programs, including a roast preset, bake preset, steam preset, and more. On top of that, the fryer heats up to 400 degrees, which should be perfect for the vast majority of uses.

There are so many things you can make in an air fryer, in fact, the possibilities are endless. I know my kid’s would love these Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets. And who wouldn’t love a batch of these Air Fryer Spicy Sweet Potato Fries? And who would have thought Air Fryer Roasted Corn would turn out so perfect.  And holy wow these Copycat Taco Bell Air Fryer Crunch Wraps sound over the top. But these Air Fryer Reuben Egg Rolls also sound crazy addictive.
Though none of the air fryers replicated deep-fried results, they all turned out nicely cooked food, and in short order. One thing to keep in mind, however. Oil is used to set the breading on packaged frozen chicken nuggets and to coat frozen fries, for example, so these processed foods are not oil- or fat-free even though you're not using oil in the cooking process.
The chicken was not only crunchy on the outside, it was also tender and juicy on the inside. The subtle flavors of the wet dredge can be tasted in the crunchy crumb topping. I served these with a side of Ranch Dressing, but you could also serve these with honey mustard, barbecue sauce, or Polynesian Sauce. All are very good options for these lightly flavored chicken tenders.
You don’t want to overcrowd the airfryer so it’s not great for large batch cooking. For meats, I found that you really want to keep everything in 1 layer to get the most golden results. This meant I could only fit in 4 drumsticks or 5 chicken tenders. If I was cooking for a crowd, I honestly would have just baked or broiled in an oven on big sheet pans
If you’re into meal prepping or are vegan, you know the beauty of the sweet potato, that versatile spud that’s good for you and takes well to any flavor you can imagine. You also know how long they take to cook, and that, as fries, they never really get that crispy. This is not the case in an air fryer, where the circulated high heat partially dehydrates the outside to a crisp, similar to eggplant, while cooking the insides until soft. Whether cut into fries, cubes, or spears, sweet potatoes cook up much faster than in the oven.
Thanks to Philips’ patented Starfish technology, all food is exposed to constant, circulating heat allowing you to cook your favorite foods with a tablespoon or less of oil. The result is evenly fried food – with no turning needed - even when food is piled up. In addition to the heated air flow, powerful direct heat from above quickly crisps the food for delicious, golden-brown results while draining excess fat.
Apart from the calories which cause us to become overweight and thus lead to the development of some mild to severe chronic illnesses and conditions, deep fried foods also contain Trans fats. These are a result of the hydrogenation which manufacturers add to the deep fried products in order to increase their stability and shelf life. This process changes the structure of fats and makes it much more difficult for our bodies to break it down properly.
Sure, there’s something nice about the crispiness of a fry right out of the deep fryer. However, if you’re looking to make a chicken, a steak, or an apple pie, you’re not going to turn to a deep fryer. More than likely, you’ll be turning to the conventional oven for those things. With an air fryer, you get the best of both worlds, so you can cook all of those things in one appliance.
The downside is that this is a big, heavy, and rather expensive machine that’s noisier than most when it’s operating. It doesn’t have digital controls, and therefore hard to set the temperature and timer precisely. With a few more parts than most air fryers, there’s more to clean. And while all of the parts can go in the dishwasher, the huge basket will eat up considerable shelf space. However, like all air fryers, it’s still relatively easy to use—this one requires no preheat—and the results are worth the payoff. A cookbook is included to give you lots of recipe ideas. If your family really likes fried food but not the fat, the Philips is definitely worth the investment.

Air fryers are healthier, if not necessarily better tasting, than deep frying. Our testers noted the lack of grease across all the finished foods — especially in the chicken strips. It was easily the biggest benefit we found with these products. We knew that air fryers only need a single tablespoon of oil to cook with, but we underestimated how favorable the results would be. Aside from that, though, none of the food really blew us out of the water. As our research had warned us, a lot of the air-fried foods were comparable to oven-cooked foods. The zucchini and broccoli were the major exceptions — they came out so dehydrated, they were nearly inedible.
A few months back, I went to a kitchen appliance trade show and was surprised by the large number of manufacturers coming out with air fryers. "Enjoy great tasting fried food"[sic] reads the cover recipe booklet for Philip's new Airfryer XXL, a lovely sounding idea. With their focus on faux fried flavor, an aversion to fat, and an emphasis on convenience in the marketing from almost every manufacturer, the rise of air fryers felt like the second coming of the George Foreman Grill.
