We soon found that the majority of air fryer brands on the market carry essentially the same internal cooking technology — circulating hot air around the food — only really differing in their external designs and features. Philips and T-fal were the exceptions, and we discovered that both companies hold patents on air-frying technology. From there, we narrowed down our search by researching the technology, reading cooking blogs, and sifting through customer reviews to find top-performing brands and top air fryer models. That left us with a list of seven products. Philips dominated the list, but we brought in a few other recommended brands to see if anything could stand up to Philips’ models.
“This worked very well, and I would recommend it to anyone who cooks in small amounts and doesn’t want to heat up the big oven or use an oil fryer. It’s big enough to hold dinner for two: eight to ten wings, or a couple of small salmon fillets on one side and a handful of frozen fries on the other, using the divider included with the product … I would not call the foods ‘fried’ per se, rather they are very nicely roasted. I will still use my oil fryer to make real fried foods (battered), but this air fryer will see a lot more use for roasted vegetables, fish, chicken, etc. I like it very much.”
As I started to load the chicken in the air fryer basket, I realized I was only going to be able to fit about four pieces into it, maybe five if I squeezed. So, I needed to cook two batches for the same amount of chicken in the air fryer that I could cook in a single batch in the oven. Being that the air fryer only has capacity to prepare food in small quantities, it’s probably better suited for those cooking for 1-2 people. If you happen to be cooking for the masses, you might want to skip the air fryer and head straight to the oven.
If you’re looking for the best cooking ability, then the Black and Decker or either Phillips HD9240/94 or Phillips HD9220/28 are your the best picks. Their cooking ability is a step up from the rest of the competition. The Black and Decker is significantly less expensive and provides the best bang for your buck, but if cost isn’t an issue, then the Phillips models will also serve you well.
Me too! The rotisserie cannot handle a 4 pound chicken or anything close. Even tied to the nines, there is virtually no clearance between the meat on the rotisserie and the drip pan. Same goes for the skewers. There is less than 1/2 inch clearance between the ingredients on the rotating skewers, and the drip pan, and so they rub against the bottom and cause things to slow down. It is a very bad design, although the concept is great. The interior (black) is nearly impossible to see into to place racks, rotisserie baskets, etc. and at counter level, you need a flashlight to see what you are doing and use your free hand to try to manipulate the food! Also, the door is just a removable hinged affair, very easy to fall off, while removing for cleaning. Like I said, great idea, but very poorly executed. Don't fall for all of those late night infomercials! Despite what the food looks like in their commercials, it just doesn't live up to them!
There are a handful of different air fryers on the market ranging from $70 to $200. I used the Gourmia GTA2500 model for the testing. When I opened the box, the amount of parts and accessories involved was a little overwhelming. It took a while to sort through everything and figure out what parts I actually needed and what was superfluous. Once assembled, the air fryer literally looked like a mini spaceship. Rather bulky and dome-like, I’m not entirely sure how I’d feel about having this live on my kitchen countertop—but I digress. I ended up using only the cooking rack and fry basket for the air fryer.

We had the other one and it worked great, gave it to me daughter after we got this one. Wish we had it back : this is good tor wings and fries but you try and use the skewers they are to short to reach on both sides, as far as the rotisserie part you have to use baby capons, not a chicken. ( joke ). Friends got the Nuwave air oven and its twice the unit ours is. Guess I ll just give this to someone else and get one of them. To bad I m out all that money! So don't waste your money.

If money is no object AND you are sure you will use it enough, then buy the Phillips. It’s sturdy, it’s got a few bells and whistles, such as a sliding rack to hold the basket, a preheat feature etc. even though, oddly, it only goes up in 30-degree increments. The bottom basket cleans easily, and the larger grid and higher wattage means even cooking and less need to flip. The larger grid does mean small things fall down. Get it HERE.
SAVE YOUR MONEY! It does not last long and they don't stand behind their products for any longer than 60 days. I really loved it at first, and my daughters spent their money on me because I asked for the oven for Christmas last year. I asked for other products from this company for Christmas this year but told them not to waste their money. Buyer beware!
What if our top-rated toaster oven added the ability to air fry? Well, you'd get the Breville Smart Oven Air. You will pay top dollar for this handsome hunk of brushed stainless-steel, but you'll get the performance you'd expect to come along with it. In air fryer mode, it consistently turned out crispy food and chicken nuggets that tasted fried. It also sports intuitive and accurate digital controls (sorely missing on the Philips and Krups), along with automatic preheat and a bright oven light.
My husband made this tonight and followed the directions to the tee. When I bit into my piece, the chicken was grossly undercooked. I then checked the internal temp with an instant food thermometer and the temp was only 118 degrees. Chicken needs to be 165. Quite a food safety hazard. I would recommend checking the internal temp of the chicken and I would suggest you add that to the written recipe. When fully cooked it was delicious.
When it comes to frying, the Philips Airfryer XXL knocked it out of the park. During testing, we tasted an awful lot of French fries and the Philips cooked up the fries we couldn’t stop noshing on. They had the combination of crunchiness, tenderness, and potato flavor that make great fries so delectable. Even when we loaded the basket with more than three pounds of frozen fries, they came out crispy. Battered Nashville hot chicken came out with a crackling crust and hamburgers rivaled ones made on the grill.
One of the stranger aspects of air fryers is that they recommend shaking the basket a few times during cooking to make sure the results are even. With the added weight of the foods you’re cooking, this can turn into something of an arm workout. Our top pick, the T-fal, was the exception here, with a self-stirring mechanism that we greatly appreciated for saving us that step.
If you’re OK with an air fryer taking up a lot of space, than the Philips XL comes with our recommendation. With a price exceeding the $200 mark, it is a fairly expensive piece of equipment but it does cook food to a very high standard and is well built and usable. Eating from home frequently helps your health just as much as simply ordering nutritious food at restaurants. They might be a bit too small for that Thanksgiving dinner and, depending on the model you buy, you might not be able to do much else other than heat up frozen fries, but that’s a low price to pay for a machine that helps you eat healthy without much of a hassle. Okay, got my air fryer last night, opened it up, set it up and tried it for breakfast this morning. The included recipe book has instructions for soft and hard boiled eggs (first page). Granted it was for "large" eggs, and I used "extra large" eggs, but followed the directions (ten minutes at 300 degrees), and the eggs were barely cooked. Put them back in and cooked for four more minutes at 350 degrees, still not cooked enough to peel (ruined a second egg trying to peel it). Put them back in for a third time, three more minutes at 300 degrees. Now I am down to four eggs (started with six). Two were cooked enough to peel and say they were "soft boiled" (very soft boiled) eggs. The other two fell apart trying to peel them because they were under cooked. Next batch of six eggs were cooked at 300 degrees for SEVENTEEN minutes (seven more minutes than the directions said), and they got brown spots on the shell, but they were indeed "hard boiled" eggs (barely). My opinion is if one can't even cook a hard boiled egg according to the directions, I don't even want to TRY anything else! The machine is nice, easy to remove the two cooking racks, and the drip tray on the bottom (all coated with non stick surfaces), but it is much smaller than I expected. It does fit on the kitchen counter nicely, and stays cool on the outside while cooking, and it looks nice if one were to leave it out all the time. This machine is NOT FOR ME, and will be returned. Ideal cooking temperatures are hard to maintain. The secret to successful deep frying is maintaining a proper oil temperature. When cooking oil falls below a certain temperature, the food's internal moisture does not repel the oil as well, resulting in greasy, undercooked food. Simply putting a bag of frozen food into a hot deep fryer will affect the oil temperature, and the heating elements of many deep fryers take a long time to recover from the shock. This is not a concern with superheated cooking methods such as convection or air frying.
Wings can be make easily in any air fryer simply by tossing dried wings in potato starch flour, spritzing with oil ( you can omit this if you want ) and cooking on the chicken setting. I will shake the basket every 10min. In the oven I believe you are supposed to rotate the racks every 10 min. I also do wings by taking damp wings and shaking them in a bag with seasoned coating like you would find in the store. This method will give you a bit more of a breading. Wings take approx 25 to 30 min to cook. I just keep an eye on them. You can tell when they are done. I like sauced wings so will take my wings, coat with sauce of choice and then put them under the broiler for about 4 minutes to set the sauce. If making buffalo style I don’t put those under the broiler I just toss in the sauce. Hope this helps. Ps, I get my potato starch flour on Amazon. It lasts a long time.
I ordered the Power Air Fryer Oven March 11th. The thing has never worked, it never would heat up. Wish i would have read these reviews before i got suckered into buying this. The only positive is that i purchased from Kohls and they have a hassle free return so I don't have to deal with the Power Air Fryer customer service or pay to have it shipped back to them.
