The Philips HD9240/94 XL Airfryer is basically a larger version of the Philips HD9641/96 Airfryer. In our tests, the two devices performed similarly, but we think the larger model is impractical for most people because it takes up a lot of counter space and costs $300. The booklet guidelines are not reliable, either: The directions say to cook 4 ounces of chicken breasts at 290 °F for eight minutes and then at 360 °F for six minutes. Unfortunately, 290 °F isn’t a temperature option on this model.
This 1400 watt electric model is perfect if you still want to enjoy some yummy fried crispy chicken or bacon and yet want to ensure that you are not consuming too many calories or harmful Trans fats. Use this appliance is stress-free. It has set up programs for different types of cooking, and you can use it to prepare nearly any kind of meal. Also, there is no mess to clean up because the basket can easily be removed and washed with soap water or in the dishwasher right after you are done.
While I was prepping the unbreaded chicken, I set the oven to preheat at 400°F, which brings me to one big perk for the air fryer: It requires not preheating. Typically, for oven “frying,” you want the oven at a very high temperature, thus heating up your kitchen. The air fryer saves you from an unbearably hot kitchen; however, it gives off a much louder noise than any oven when operating.
There are plenty of air fryers out there, but there are also plenty of reasons why the Philips HD9641/96 is the best one. For starters, most users argue that the device is able to cook food nice and evenly, which is pretty important. Not only that, but the interface of the Philips HD9641/96 is relatively easy to use thanks largely to its so-called “QuickControl” dial, and features a relatively small footprint compared to many of the other air fryers out there.
“This worked very well, and I would recommend it to anyone who cooks in small amounts and doesn’t want to heat up the big oven or use an oil fryer. It’s big enough to hold dinner for two: eight to ten wings, or a couple of small salmon fillets on one side and a handful of frozen fries on the other, using the divider included with the product … I would not call the foods ‘fried’ per se, rather they are very nicely roasted. I will still use my oil fryer to make real fried foods (battered), but this air fryer will see a lot more use for roasted vegetables, fish, chicken, etc. I like it very much.”
In terms of the design, it’s fairly generic and copies the egg shape of other air fryers. It comes with a digital screen that has 7 pre-set programs for cooking different food items. You can also adjust the timer and temperature if you wish and it should be noted that when the timer expires, it will automatically shut off the machine so your food won’t keep cooking. Top this off with a cool to touch handle (this thing goes up to 400 °F!) and we have a safe and user-friendly air fryer.
Desserts, and especially brownies, may seem like the last thing you want to subject to the intense high heat of an air fryer, but fortunately, that same heat works to the brownie’s advantage here. No more picking the right brownie square that’s the perfect mixture of chewy and fudgy, because when you bake up brownie batter in a pan in the air fryer, the heat of the machine sets the outsides like a traditional brownie by the time the inside is cooked, but still left fudgy and gooey, creating almost its own “sauce” for the rest of the brownie. Lift it out of the machine, top it with scoops of ice cream, and dig in with two or four spoons and forget about cutting bars forever.
We loved the super simplistic design. We know that air frying doesn’t require too much temperature monitoring, and it’s apparent that T-fal have implemented this knowledge in the design. There is only an on/off button and a timer control that displays a digital countdown which can be set up to 99 minutes. There is no temperature dial with this unit heating up to 338 °F and staying there.
I ordered the elite model and the two round bonus pans, which came under a separate order. When I got the air fryer, I read the manual which states you CANNOT reheat liquids in it. I called the customer number and they said it is primarily an air fryer and not meant for microwaving. I argued that was deceptive advertising and if it could not replace my microwave, I wanted to send it back. They offered to reduce the price by $40 if I kept it, which I refused because it was not as advertised.
