I'm Ashley Clarke Thompson. And I'm Ry Crist. And we're here at the CNET applicanes office to talk about what has been on our mind and in our stomachs for the past two weeks. Which is air fryers. Yeah, so air fryers, the thing you have to understand about these things, is that they aren't really frying anything. It's just blowing hot air over your food in this kind of small, contained space and that makes them sort of a small, counter top, convection oven And nothing that you cook in them is gonna be much different than what you get out of a convection oven. It's just kind of a different way of doing it. And you know, it has good marketing. It's all about, like you can fry up foods healthier, you know? But at the end of the day, we really weren't Too impressed with most of these. Yeah, I mean, it's the same difference between frying and air frying as frying and baking. If I just put a bunch of frozen french fries out on a baking sheet and baked them, I'm not using oil, I'm not deep frying them in their own juices or anything. It's just going to be what we get out of an air fryer. Which is just this, golden brown, kind of crispy, kind of dry. Frozen fries. And these are perfectly reheated, these are snackable. I enjoy these fries, it's fine. But a lot of these new fryers cost $200, $300 and that just feel absolutely ridiculous. I wouldn't spend more than a $100 for a Unitasker like this that's just heating up frozen stuff. You know, I honestly couldn't especially for the more expensive fryers that we tested. I mean, some of them the MSRP is $300. Which for me was a lot of money for something that essentially does one thing really well. I mean, as somebody who tests small appliances, I think you would be better off with a toaster oven. It can do the same thing, especially if it has convection in the toaster oven, and it can toast, which these cannot. Yeah, thank you for talking while I was chewing by the way. Now it's my turn. Your turn, yeah. The one that we have here, the Simple Chef, is just 70 bucks. So it's the cheapest we tested. Did a fine job with fries, did the cheese sticks and pizza rolls and frozen snack tests pretty well Didn't do great with fresh fries, and burgers, and chicken wings. It was okay. But again, nothing better than you'd get out of your oven. So if you understand that you're not getting a special cooking appliance that's gonna unlock some new recipes and really just Convenient oven for your counter top, I think this one is fine. But I wouldn't spend much more than that. Yeah, I agree. I mean, if you have just some spare money and a love of pizza rolls and mozarella sticks then sure, 70 bucks, not too bad.

Considering a price tag of less than $100 we can definitely see a couple of trade-offs as a result of keeping the price as low as possible.  There is no digital display, making everything a tad bit harder and less accurate to use.  Expectantly, the design comes with the classic issue of accidentally setting the timer too long and not being able to dial it back.
Some drawbacks to this machine are that it is loud and very smoky. All of the fryers produced more smoke than we expected, but this one was the worst for that. It was also tough to clean. This was one of few that had a cooking basket made of wire, like hot-oil fryers. That means there are lots of tiny grooves to get clean. The denser metal baskets on competing air fryers had larger openings that didn’t trap food as much. We pre-soaked the Philips basket, but it still took some effort to get it totally clean. At least you have the option of throwing it in the dishwasher.

I followed the Leah Chase's Oven-Fried Chicken recipe to test the second batch of chicken. After dredging, I brushed each piece of chicken with a light coat of olive oil in order to soak up the flour and prevent it from caking up and not “frying” correctly. I set the airfryer to 410°F for 30 minutes and preheat the oven at 425°F. However, 10 minutes into baking, the oven started to smoke really bad, so I turned the temperature down to 400°F. (I suspect the excess flour on the pan was burning.) Halfway through cooking, I flipped the chicken in both the oven and air fryer and noticed the bottom breading stuck to the basket in the air fryer, so I would definitely recommend spraying the basket with cooking spray. Naturally, the oven batch took 15 minutes longer (45 minutes total) to cook since I turned the temperature down. The air fryer chicken again cooked quicker, was crisper, and did not smoke up the kitchen. In fact, the air fryer batch was delightfully crispy and the breading was fully cooked through—no soggy bits to be seen. The drawback, again, was that it could only hold a few pieces of chicken. That said, though the oven batch may not have been quite a crisp in the breading, I will say, the flesh was much juicer. 
Traded in my Big Boss Air Fryer for one of these and I absolutely love it. I cooked bacon the other day. You need to rotate the racks every now and then because the top cooks faster than the others and you need to spritz them lightly with cooking spray. Two days ago I used the rotisserie. Took me a while to find the spit because it was on the bottom of the styrofoam packaging. Good thing I didn't throw it out. It's a great little oven. It would be perfect for a student in college or a senior. I just love it.

I ran into the same issue just today. I contacted powerairfryer.com and showed them a screen shot and the answer they gave me was, it doesn't look like it's working. I asked what else they suggested if I want to use PayPal, they stated that I should just keep trying. Looking at your post, I should give up on that thought as you tried 11 days ago and it's still not working. That's too bad for them though, they should really fix that issue.
I purchased this air fryer during the lightening sale because Gordon Ramsay endorses this model. It arrived and at first I was a little intimidated by it then I thought I'll start with potatoes. I used some gold potatoes I had at home for baking and cut them into identical sized French fries, soaked them in water for 30 minutes before air frying, sprayed the basket with cooking spray, placed the soaked potatoes in the air fryer and 22 minutes later had the best French fries of my life!!! Being a lemon pepper chicken wing lover I decided to do chicken wings but I didn't have the party wings so I used full size wings, washed and dried them then coated with lemon pepper seasoning and a little salt, again sprayed the basket and cooked them, they also came out delicious!!! My family has loved everything I've cooked in it. Today I cooked chicken breasts, bone and skin on and they came out divine. I purchased the Air Fryer to aid in weight loss by lowering the amount of fat from regular frying and calories and I have not been disappointed yet. I saw a comment that said the reviews were bogus because they weren't from verified purchasers so here you go, I purchased mine on July 11th and haven't stopped using it. One of the issues I think people have is they still feel they need to add a lot of oil but you don't, I don't use any except to spray the basket. Me too! The rotisserie cannot handle a 4 pound chicken or anything close. Even tied to the nines, there is virtually no clearance between the meat on the rotisserie and the drip pan. Same goes for the skewers. There is less than 1/2 inch clearance between the ingredients on the rotating skewers, and the drip pan, and so they rub against the bottom and cause things to slow down. It is a very bad design, although the concept is great. The interior (black) is nearly impossible to see into to place racks, rotisserie baskets, etc. and at counter level, you need a flashlight to see what you are doing and use your free hand to try to manipulate the food! Also, the door is just a removable hinged affair, very easy to fall off, while removing for cleaning. Like I said, great idea, but very poorly executed. Don't fall for all of those late night infomercials! Despite what the food looks like in their commercials, it just doesn't live up to them!
Of all the air fryers we tested, the Philips HD9641/96 had the smallest footprint, measuring approximately 14¼ by 10½ by 11 inches, length by width by height. That said, it’s still bulky, and it takes up ample space on a kitchen counter. But it has the least offensive design, unlike the huge T-fal air fryer we tested, which at about 17 by 12½ by 8 inches looked like something out of an ’80s sci-fi movie.

With air-fryers, you can get away with very simplistic controls and the T-fal has demonstrated this wonderfully.  There are some issues with the intuitive paddle implementation and non-existent auto shut-off feature but the air fryer gets the job done when it comes to cooking food.  If the simple issues mentioned were fixed this model would probably be at number 1.  As it stands, a respectable 3rd place mention is what the T-fal ActiFry deserves.
This unit is probably the best on the market for the price. I have been using mine for over a year with great results. I am so happy that I bought 2 more for gifts for my daughters and they love the results. I read a lot of negative comments from others on how the basket goes in when warm and all I can say to them is use common sense and hold the basket up as you slide it in and it slides right into place. I recommend this product to friends all the time.
Before buying an air fryer, you first need to understand what are you looking at in a fryer. If your focus is on food, taste, texture, and getting your recipes right, then skip the air fryer and buy a deep fryer. It uses a lot of oil and is unhealthy, but you won't get the exact taste and texture from an air fryer, and you risk drying out some foods.

And not only did I think we were not going to use it, I especially did not want another “thing” on my kitchen counter. Extra stuff on my kitchen counters is really one of my pet peeves. I really despise anything being dumped on them, whether it’s mail, car keys, computers…take them to your room and keep them there! But that’s a rant for another day.

Unlike most models in this price category, it doesn’t have digital controls. While it’s not huge, it is taller than typical toaster ovens. It accommodates two pounds of fries, six slices of bread and according to Cuisinart, a four-pound chicken. If you love to toss everything in the dishwasher, be aware that all the parts need to cleaned by hand. But unless you already have a toaster oven that you love, the Cuisinart is a worth considering for its versatility.

I had almost written off fried chickpeas as something that will never actually be good—that is, until I cooked them in the air fryer. The absence of the oil needed in the oven, deep-fat fryer, or skillet actually helps them get crispier because the air fryer’s heat dries out the exterior, while what little oil gets used has a chance to imbue the beans with a beautiful golden brown color. All crunch + no mess = I’m sold.

Though none of the air fryers replicated deep-fried results, they all turned out nicely cooked food, and in short order. One thing to keep in mind, however. Oil is used to set the breading on packaged frozen chicken nuggets and to coat frozen fries, for example, so these processed foods are not oil- or fat-free even though you're not using oil in the cooking process.
