People are enthusiastic about air fryers these days, but we think that’s because they don’t realize they already have appliances in their home that will create the same (or better) results. Given that all air fryers do is blow hot air around, we don’t think any of the ones we tried are worth the money—especially if you already have a convection oven or toaster oven. Here’s a full rundown of air fryers’ flaws.
There are several indications on top of the model that point out the recommended time and temperature settings for common food items like chips, chicken, steak and fish. There is also a warmup light which is something we have not seen in other models. The idea is that once the warmup is complete, the button will light up meaning you should the put the food in, thus ensuring that a stable temperature is applied at all times.
I went to the store and there they were, same brand and everything. I split up the bag, and started one batch in the air fryer, and another in my oven with the convection off, then made a follow-up batch using the convection setting. The air fryer fries were nicely browned and crisp, but a bit hollowed out, seemingly at the expense of some pleasant creaminess inside. The no-convection oven batch was more leathery on the outside, creamy within, and noticeably less browned. The convection oven version landed squarely between the two.
We talked to three chefs and fried turkeys on a propane burner and in an electric fryer to find the Bayou Classic Aluminum Stockpot paired with the Bayou Classic Single Burner patio stove is the best turkey fryer for most people. The aluminum stockpot heats oil more quickly than stainless steel options, which helps keep temperature steady after adding a turkey, and the patio stove is solidly built and more stable than the stands packaged in kits.
The “fryer” baskets on the models we tested have a nonstick coating. As we’ve learned from researching and testing nonstick skillets, the coating will eventually deteriorate with regular use and exposure to high heat. Additionally, our testers found each air fryer’s perforated basket and tray to be far more difficult to clean than the single sheet pan we used in the oven or toaster oven.
