CON: The trays came a little warped, though I later when I used the trays for chicken wings, the heat helped straighten the trays a bit. The little plastic channels for the trays are very difficult to use. It takes me a couple of tries of very careful insertion in order to catch the grooves correctly. This is incredibly difficult when you have super hot trays, heavy with food on them.
There are many advantages to using an air fryer over an oven. For example, the oil is extracted and usually kept under the basket when in an air fryer. In the air fryer, everything comes out crispier, juicier and always perfectly cooked in an incredibly short amount of time. Tatar tots in the air fryer are the best. Chicken in the air fryer, breaded or not is so juicy, tender and delicious. Even ribeye steaks are awesome in the air fryer and I can’t even believe I was willing to try that. Anyway, you get it, it’s worth every penny.

I'm Ashley Clarke Thompson. And I'm Ry Crist. And we're here at the CNET applicanes office to talk about what has been on our mind and in our stomachs for the past two weeks. Which is air fryers. Yeah, so air fryers, the thing you have to understand about these things, is that they aren't really frying anything. It's just blowing hot air over your food in this kind of small, contained space and that makes them sort of a small, counter top, convection oven And nothing that you cook in them is gonna be much different than what you get out of a convection oven. It's just kind of a different way of doing it. And you know, it has good marketing. It's all about, like you can fry up foods healthier, you know? But at the end of the day, we really weren't Too impressed with most of these. Yeah, I mean, it's the same difference between frying and air frying as frying and baking. If I just put a bunch of frozen french fries out on a baking sheet and baked them, I'm not using oil, I'm not deep frying them in their own juices or anything. It's just going to be what we get out of an air fryer. Which is just this, golden brown, kind of crispy, kind of dry. Frozen fries. And these are perfectly reheated, these are snackable. I enjoy these fries, it's fine. But a lot of these new fryers cost $200, $300 and that just feel absolutely ridiculous. I wouldn't spend more than a $100 for a Unitasker like this that's just heating up frozen stuff. You know, I honestly couldn't especially for the more expensive fryers that we tested. I mean, some of them the MSRP is $300. Which for me was a lot of money for something that essentially does one thing really well. I mean, as somebody who tests small appliances, I think you would be better off with a toaster oven. It can do the same thing, especially if it has convection in the toaster oven, and it can toast, which these cannot. Yeah, thank you for talking while I was chewing by the way. Now it's my turn. Your turn, yeah. The one that we have here, the Simple Chef, is just 70 bucks. So it's the cheapest we tested. Did a fine job with fries, did the cheese sticks and pizza rolls and frozen snack tests pretty well Didn't do great with fresh fries, and burgers, and chicken wings. It was okay. But again, nothing better than you'd get out of your oven. So if you understand that you're not getting a special cooking appliance that's gonna unlock some new recipes and really just Convenient oven for your counter top, I think this one is fine. But I wouldn't spend much more than that. Yeah, I agree. I mean, if you have just some spare money and a love of pizza rolls and mozarella sticks then sure, 70 bucks, not too bad.
The best air fryers are marketed on their ability to produce an air fried texture to the outside of food that mimics that of deep fried food. While it can definitely get pretty close, there is a specific taste and texture to deep fried food that’s impossible to replicate just with rapid air circulation. It isn’t an extremely distinct difference, but your air fryer food will definitely have a different feeling to it.
Finally, we compared the basket weight of the products, how easy the controls were to operate, and whether the machine was actually hassle-free to clean up. Fortunately for our co-workers, the air-frying process was measurably less messy than deep frying. We didn’t have an oily pool to clean up afterward; the components were smaller than deep fryer parts; and the total cook time was pretty short, so you don’t have to waste all that time waiting. We wanted to see if our finalists could cook our favorite fried foods: french fries (fresh and frozen), chicken strips, and healthier options like zucchini and broccoli. In addition to being commonly fried fare, these foods allowed us to see how the air fryers handled different textures, densities, and tastes. Since french fries are supposed to be the easiest food for an air fryer to handle, we tested fresh and frozen fries across all models, seeing which ones got closest to that deep-fried crunch. Three of our air fryers couldn't even give us decent french fries, so we knocked them out of testing. We took the four top performers through additional testing to see which could cook the crispiest chicken strips (two of our models) and the juiciest grilled veggies (none of the models).

We were initially hesitant about the T-fal only having a single temperature setting: 338 degrees. We worried things might come out undercooked, but it turned out not to be a problem. I really liked the way the airfryer worked and performed but after only three times the fan quit it cost me 40 bucks to return it !!!! also if I would have got it replaced , the NEW unit WOULD NOT HAVE CAME WITH ANOTHER 60 DAY WARRANTY !!! SO WHAT'S THAT SAY ABOUT THEIR FAITH IN THEIR PRODUCT !!! ALSO THEY WOULD NOT REIMBURSE MY SHIPPING FEE !!! Like I said, I loved how it performed !!! BUT UNTIL THEY ADMIT AND ADDRESS THE FAN PROBLEM I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER ONE OF THEIR PRODUCTS !!! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT !!!!!
