I followed the Leah Chase's Oven-Fried Chicken recipe to test the second batch of chicken. After dredging, I brushed each piece of chicken with a light coat of olive oil in order to soak up the flour and prevent it from caking up and not “frying” correctly. I set the airfryer to 410°F for 30 minutes and preheat the oven at 425°F. However, 10 minutes into baking, the oven started to smoke really bad, so I turned the temperature down to 400°F. (I suspect the excess flour on the pan was burning.) Halfway through cooking, I flipped the chicken in both the oven and air fryer and noticed the bottom breading stuck to the basket in the air fryer, so I would definitely recommend spraying the basket with cooking spray. Naturally, the oven batch took 15 minutes longer (45 minutes total) to cook since I turned the temperature down. The air fryer chicken again cooked quicker, was crisper, and did not smoke up the kitchen. In fact, the air fryer batch was delightfully crispy and the breading was fully cooked through—no soggy bits to be seen. The drawback, again, was that it could only hold a few pieces of chicken. That said, though the oven batch may not have been quite a crisp in the breading, I will say, the flesh was much juicer.

A confusion still remains in our mind about how to select best Air Fryer, that will suit our need or not. Prepare the chicken like you would traditionally. Preheat the air fryer for 10 minutes at 200 degrees. Sprinkle the chicken with seasoning, pass it through white flour, a bowl of battered eggs, then back to the flower again. Place it in the air fryer basket and set the timer on for 30 minutes. Cook at a temperature of 350 degrees. Flip after 30 minutes or until the outside has reached a golden-brown color and then wait 20 minutes for the other side to cook.
The downside is that this is a big, heavy, and rather expensive machine that’s noisier than most when it’s operating. It doesn’t have digital controls, and therefore hard to set the temperature and timer precisely. With a few more parts than most air fryers, there’s more to clean. And while all of the parts can go in the dishwasher, the huge basket will eat up considerable shelf space. However, like all air fryers, it’s still relatively easy to use—this one requires no preheat—and the results are worth the payoff. A cookbook is included to give you lots of recipe ideas. If your family really likes fried food but not the fat, the Philips is definitely worth the investment.

An appliance I wish I had bought a long time ago! Discovered even one tablespoon of oil was too much to make really crispy french fries. Appreciate not having to deal with a pot of frying oil, as well as the calories I didn't take in because mine were air fried. Only thing I would hope for is an accessory second shelf such as the one Philip's makes for their model. The photo I've uploaded is the remainder of fries after my husband and I had our generous portions.
Desserts, and especially brownies, may seem like the last thing you want to subject to the intense high heat of an air fryer, but fortunately, that same heat works to the brownie’s advantage here. No more picking the right brownie square that’s the perfect mixture of chewy and fudgy, because when you bake up brownie batter in a pan in the air fryer, the heat of the machine sets the outsides like a traditional brownie by the time the inside is cooked, but still left fudgy and gooey, creating almost its own “sauce” for the rest of the brownie. Lift it out of the machine, top it with scoops of ice cream, and dig in with two or four spoons and forget about cutting bars forever.
In terms of accessories, you get an e-book and physical cookbook with more than 40 recipes. Perhaps the biggest incentive to give this air fryer a go, is the 2 year warranty which suggests a quality build. However; we did find it hard to slide the bottom drawer or ‘container’ back in and it required multiple attempts. In fact, several online reviews have also pointed out this issue and it looks to be a design oversight from the brand.
For those who just want to see what the air frying trend is all about, we'd recommend this smaller GoWise option. It's super affordable at just $70 and takes up far less counter space than the 5.8-quart option. Also a best-selling air fryer on Amazon, this programmable fryer has eight ready-to-go presets, including warm, fries/chips, chicken, steak, shrimp, pork, cake and fish. Or you can hit a timer and set the cooking temperature for a more manual approach.
You don’t want to overcrowd the airfryer so it’s not great for large batch cooking. For meats, I found that you really want to keep everything in 1 layer to get the most golden results. This meant I could only fit in 4 drumsticks or 5 chicken tenders. If I was cooking for a crowd, I honestly would have just baked or broiled in an oven on big sheet pans
Thanks to Philips’ patented Starfish technology, all food is exposed to constant, circulating heat allowing you to cook your favorite foods with a tablespoon or less of oil. The result is evenly fried food – with no turning needed - even when food is piled up. In addition to the heated air flow, powerful direct heat from above quickly crisps the food for delicious, golden-brown results while draining excess fat.
As someone that has avoided a deep fryer all of her years – yes, even for my doughnuts chapter in my cookbook I used a large, deep frying pan- I really wanted to try an Airfryer out. The secret to the healthy frying is that the Phillips Airfryer uses their proprietary Rapid Air Technology. Thanks to this technology, the airfryer fries, bakes, roasts and grills with little to no oil, making it a perfect solution for fast, tasty and healthy meals and snacks.
As stated above, an air fryer is a kitchen appliance that uses hot air circulation to cook food placed in the removable tray. The device’s oversized cooking chamber can heat air up to 400 °F, allowing you to prepare a variety of foods using it. Heated air is then passed through the food by to the exhaust fan located above the cooking chamber. This way heat is evenly spread around the food. Temperature can be adjusted manually or automatically if you are using preset programs.
The pre-sets make the job all too easy and the included 14 recipe booklet is great for beginners. However; the lack of accessories, such as pans or racks makes certain foods tricky to cook, and the grated basket, while great for draining oil, can be a bit of a pain when marinating or using liquid ingredients. The good news is that it does come in a 3.7QT or 5.8QT variety so can pick which one suits you.
Furthermore you don’t get many accessories with this model and the grated basket is the toll you have to hold the food. Whilst perfect for chips and most solid foods, foods that use marination or are more liquid will seep through the bass. An easy fix is to use an paper plate or something that is solid to retain the liquid. If you plan to bake or cook liquids or semi liquid ingredients, it is recommended that you buy the baking pan which comes as a one of the many available accessories.
We wanted to see if our finalists could cook our favorite fried foods: french fries (fresh and frozen), chicken strips, and healthier options like zucchini and broccoli. In addition to being commonly fried fare, these foods allowed us to see how the air fryers handled different textures, densities, and tastes. Since french fries are supposed to be the easiest food for an air fryer to handle, we tested fresh and frozen fries across all models, seeing which ones got closest to that deep-fried crunch. Three of our air fryers couldn't even give us decent french fries, so we knocked them out of testing. We took the four top performers through additional testing to see which could cook the crispiest chicken strips (two of our models) and the juiciest grilled veggies (none of the models).
To help you spend wisely, we chose seven highly-rated air fryers, as well as two toaster ovens with air fryer capabilities, and put them to work air frying potatoes and chicken. We took everything from cooking time and results to size, ease of use, and other factors into consideration in our tests to get a complete picture of what it'd be like to own any of these air fryers, so no matter which you choose, you'll know exactly what to expect.
I purchased this air fryer during the lightening sale because Gordon Ramsay endorses this model. It arrived and at first I was a little intimidated by it then I thought I'll start with potatoes. I used some gold potatoes I had at home for baking and cut them into identical sized French fries, soaked them in water for 30 minutes before air frying, sprayed the basket with cooking spray, placed the soaked potatoes in the air fryer and 22 minutes later had the best French fries of my life!!! Being a lemon pepper chicken wing lover I decided to do chicken wings but I didn't have the party wings so I used full size wings, washed and dried them then coated with lemon pepper seasoning and a little salt, again sprayed the basket and cooked them, they also came out delicious!!! My family has loved everything I've cooked in it. Today I cooked chicken breasts, bone and skin on and they came out divine. I purchased the Air Fryer to aid in weight loss by lowering the amount of fat from regular frying and calories and I have not been disappointed yet. I saw a comment that said the reviews were bogus because they weren't from verified purchasers so here you go, I purchased mine on July 11th and haven't stopped using it. One of the issues I think people have is they still feel they need to add a lot of oil but you don't, I don't use any except to spray the basket. I hope this helps anyone thinking about purchasing an Air Fryer, I can't wait to try more recipes with mine!!! You get many extras with this unit, including a baking pan and muffin cups so you can make desserts in addition to snacks and meats. There are also additional racks to facilitate roasting and grilling. Since the Brio is much more compact than your oven, and most toaster ovens, it can do all of these tasks very quickly, albeit in limited quantities.
“Finally bought one of these and have not regretted since. One of the best kitchen tools on my countertop. Easy to use, easy to clean, and the best thing are all the healthy foods. No more greasy French fries. One of the nice features of this fryer is that the basket is quite large compared to the other brands I was looking at. It will easily hold enough fries for three to four people to eat. I’ve been experimenting with food items I thought I would never fry. Just add one to two teaspoons of olive oil, add the items, timer for 20 minutes, and you’re done. I’ve done eggs, wings, fries that you would ‘normally’ fry. But I’ve also done egg noodles (like pan-fried noodles in Chinese restaurants). I tried deep-fried Twinkies even. Didn’t come out exactly like the deep-fried Twinkies from the fairs, but it wasn’t horrible either. Overall, my family enjoys having this fryer. It really is a good way to make the normally unhealthy fried foods less unhealthy.”
Obviously, you can cook roast beef in the oven to great success, but it takes a lot of tinkering with time and temperature to get that perfect medium-rare inside and, like, when was the last time you made homemade roast beef?! Air frying the roast gives you more precise control over the time and temperature and, if followed to a T per the recipe in my book, will give you perfect results in just 40 minutes flat, bringing yet another time-intensive and finicky dish into the world of easy weeknight cooking.
Not at all happy with this product. The first use for battered shrimp proved to be successul but each use since has been a disaster. It takes 30 minutes to heat to semi crisp a precooked hamburger. Testing the temp, it appears to never reach the set temp. When I called customer service they had no solution but to contact Amazon which I will be doing with a return item request.
