Cool exterior: One of the many complaints with air fryers is the chance of overheating and blowing out hot steam, but one of the reasons T-fal is so highly reviewed is because of how safe it is. Not only does it have a cool exterior for you to safely touch it if needed, it also doesn’t blow out hot steam like other air fryers, making it a top choice for families with small children.
Air fryers are healthier, if not necessarily better tasting, than deep frying. Our testers noted the lack of grease across all the finished foods — especially in the chicken strips. It was easily the biggest benefit we found with these products. We knew that air fryers only need a single tablespoon of oil to cook with, but we underestimated how favorable the results would be. Aside from that, though, none of the food really blew us out of the water. As our research had warned us, a lot of the air-fried foods were comparable to oven-cooked foods. The zucchini and broccoli were the major exceptions — they came out so dehydrated, they were nearly inedible.
Different foods and meals require different temperature settings, so you need to make sure that the unit has easily adjustable temperature levels. The adjustment can be either analog or digital. Digital control is generally more accurate than the analog options, but units with digital temperature control can be pricier than those with analog control.

“I can’t believe how convenient this appliance is to use. I just pull out the basket, throw in some food, then set the temperature and timer according to the directions printed on the top of the unit. As long as I remember to shake the basket halfway through the cooking time, I get consistently great results. French fries don’t have that super-crispy fried taste, but they’re pretty darn good. We get the Ore-Ida Simply Olive Oil and Sea Salt fries, and they come out with a taste and texture very similar to what you’d get at Wendy’s. But these have got to be much healthier, as you’re adding no fat in the cooking process! … My teen is already asking if he can take one with him to college!”
Fresh Chicken wings - this is what sold me on this machine. Just take fresh wings from the grocery store and brush with some olive oil, cook for 18 minutes on 350-390 with a shake half way, plate and pour on your favorite warmed wing sauce. Definitely as good as doing it in the deep fryer in terms of crisp on on the outside and tender inside, superior to baking as well (conventional baking). However, this does create some smoke but if you pour out the oil (the extra oil just from the chicken itself that comes from cooking) at the time you shake you will avoid the smoke. This makes 8 wings easily, could probably make 12 easily as well without stacking. and I am also thinking of getting the layering rack when the price goes down.
The only accurate way to determine any recipe’s SmartPoints® value is to plug the ingredients into the recipe builder on the Weight Watchers website which is how I calculate everything. The SmartPoints® calculator isn’t meant for recipes and will often give you the wrong points (usually higher) because it’s counting the fruits and vegetables. So if you see a recipe with a SmartPoints® value that’s different from what the calculator tells you, that is why.
Let us have a look at the problems of the users with the machine. One person compared the air fryer with the toaster oven because it bakes the food rather than fries. Another one mentioned that this tool could not feed the whole family – it can only prepare food for the two or three people. Some say that it takes much longer time to cook than mentioned in the instructions.
Our own testing agrees with other users experience.  We first put in frozen chips and set it to what was recommended in the cookbook.  They came out well cooked and crispy.  Next we threw in some chicken drumsticks – 4 in total – and found the top and bottom to be more brown than the sides.  Note that we were testing the larger 5 L model, but the results can be applied to the smaller capacity version as well.
The pre-sets make the job all too easy and the included 14 recipe booklet is great for beginners.  However; the lack of accessories, such as pans or racks makes certain foods tricky to cook, and the grated basket, while great for draining oil, can be a bit of a pain when marinating or using liquid ingredients.  The good news is that it does come in a 3.7QT or 5.8QT variety so can pick which one suits you.

The air fryer comes with a basket divider, which like the Black and Decker Air Fryer, is used to split the cooking basket in two so you can effectively cook two food items.  This model also comes in a 5.3 qt and and a smaller 3.4 qt capacity.  If you’re cooking for a family (3-4 people) then the larger size is a clear choice, though it is slightly more expensive.


As a congenitally blind 65-year old cook, I’ve used all sorts of deep-fat fryers, and even pan fry. However, being a double widower, with no one to impress and cook for, I very rarely deep fry because of the setup and cleanup time. The 9220-28 or TFal seem like good candidates for me. I’ll probably use the timer on my Talking Magic Chef microwave, and can’t use digital beasties sans speech output, so analog is better than good. However, wondering which of the two might have more easily markable dial? Usually either notch outer edge of dial, or if nothing to aim notches at, mark the dials with loc-dots or highmark. Suggestions please?

- Frozen Foods - From my experience this is one area where it really shines. Instead of limp or soggy reheated frozen foods from the microwave, the Air Fryer can reheat just about anything I've thrown at it from frozen fish fillets to onion rings or corn dogs, and everything is crispy or crunchy as if fried in oil, but it's not, which makes it so much healthier.
This unit comes with a mesh basket and divider so you can cook two portions of food at once.  We also liked that the timer can be set up to 60 minutes which is double that of other models such as the GoWise or Avalon Bay Air Fryer.  On the top of the model, you’ll find two indicator lights, one for when the air fryer is turned on and the other for when the preheat temperature is reached.  This is a cool feature as it means you’re only cooking at the temperature that you set rather than wasting time as it heats up.
The Cozyna 3.7 QT is a perfect small and yet very powerful convection oven which you can use to cook just about anything faster and without the mess involved in traditional frying, roasting, baking or grilling. After you are done, you can quickly take it apart and pop it into the dishwasher. It is a great kitchen appliance which doesn’t take up too much space, and which uses minimal amounts of oil for preparing your meals.
“This is a great addition to your kitchen. I do think calling it a ‘fryer’ is a little misleading. I know that all these companies are calling them fryers, but really, this seems more like a countertop convection oven. It does everything your oven does but faster. It won’t heat up your entire house or kitchen, and it uses less energy. However, it also cooks in smaller quantities than your oven. It’s incredibly easy to use and clean. I’ve used it almost every day since I took it out of the box, and I’ve played around with cooking all sorts of different things in it. We are a family of four, and to cook a whole meal in it requires cooking things in shifts. If you’re doing part of a meal in it, it’s perfect, or if you were a couple or single person cooking for yourself, this would be a great alternative to using your big oven. A decent, simple, single-person serving size best air fryer can cost about $60 to $100. These will probably not have any accessories and will only have the ‘frying’ function, but they will get the job done. A high quality, functional, large air fryer will be between $120 to $300. These will have various accessories, cooking modes, and time-saving features.

There’s no one way to tell if something is good for you or not. A certain amount of fat is important for your body to keep functioning properly, and just eating fried foods now and then definitely won’t have a negative impact on your health by itself. However, air fryers let you cook a much larger array of food, and they let you cook these foods simply and easily. Being able to cook more food more simply will definitely lower your stress levels, and there’s strong evidence that being more comfortable while eating lets you absorb more of the nutrients from it! It’s a win all around.
Companies that sell air fryers claim that they are a more healthful option because they use less oil than traditional deep fryers, which is true. But since air fryers are a form of convection baking, these companies are comparing apples to oranges. To demonstrate, we tried cooking traditional buttermilk-battered chicken—which would normally be shallow or deep fried—in an air fryer, and the results were disastrous. The chicken was cooked through, but sections of the batter were overcooked, while other areas had globs of raw wet flour. The lesson here is that battered foods need to be submerged (or partially submerged and flipped) in oil for even browning and texture. The mediocre food we prepared in an air fryer only left us pining for real honest-to-goodness fried food made the old-fashioned way.
I purchased Power Air Fryer Elite from the TV commercial. I thought you could cook foods by the selection, I was wrong. You have to set the machine up for every item, and it did not cook any faster than my built-in oven. Also, the meats that I cooked in it came out a little dry. I decided to dehydrate some fruit, and it took all day. I own a dehydrator, so I was not impressed.

No more greasy French fries. One of the nice features of this fryer is that the basket is quite large compared to the other brands I was looking at. It will easily hold enough fries for three to four people to eat. I’ve been experimenting with food items I thought I would never fry. Just add one to two teaspoons of olive oil, add the items, timer for 20 minutes, and you’re done. I’ve done eggs, wings, fries that you would ‘normally’ fry. But I’ve also done egg noodles (like pan-fried noodles in Chinese restaurants). I tried deep-fried Twinkies even. Didn’t come out exactly like the deep-fried Twinkies from the fairs, but it wasn’t horrible either. Overall, my family enjoys having this fryer. The egg-shaped Black + Decker 2L Purifry is not all that much smaller in size than other air fryers but has a much smaller basket. B + D only recommends that you cook a half pound of fries or one burger at a time. While it gives good results, it seems like if you’re dedicating so much counter space to an appliance, you should be able to cook enough food for four at once. Plus, the basket didn’t glide in and out easily. Like many, it doesn’t have digital controls so it’s hard to set precisely. But our biggest complaint is that the numbers are so small that we literally needed to use a magnifying glass to set the temperature. Finish available in black and white.

The NuWave was easy to use but not easy to clean. The air fryers that prepared the crispiest and most evenly cooked chicken and fries were the ones with wire baskets – like this one – instead of thick metal baskets with large holes cut out of them. Unfortunately, the wire basket ones were harder to clean. We struggled and scraped at first but then decided to soak them all for a bit. The Brio's basket was still harder to clean than a lot of others, but the crispy food it produced was worth it. Although we cleaned it by hand, this basket can go in the dishwasher.

The large size is perfect for my family of four … I’m honestly considering purchasing a second unit to roast veggies. I wanted to share my UNBIASED, honest opinion about them. I will give you my opinion on those four, and then you can make an educated decision on which one you want to purchase based on this Air Fryer Review and your personal preferences.

I've read multiple reviews prior to purchasing and knew what I was getting into prior to its arrival, and was able to try a few things out to make my own conclusions. Also there are many more reviews from the UK/Australia, but I use the US version and have cooking times in farenheit etc.

The Philips Avance employs the same rapid air-circulation technology that most other air fryers do, but the swirling, starfish-like arms that cover the bottom of the bowl set it apart from the competition. These thick, raised wedges force the air to first spread out and then rise back up to the top, helping move the air more evenly around the bowl rather than simply blowing hot air into it. This technology may seem gimmicky at first glance, but we found it actually cooked the food more evenly than other air fryers. All our fries came out nice and crispy, unlike what we got from the Avalon Bay or GoWise USA: a layer of burned fries on top of undercooked ones.

An appliance I wish I had bought a long time ago! Discovered even one tablespoon of oil was too much to make really crispy french fries. Appreciate not having to deal with a pot of frying oil, as well as the calories I didn't take in because mine were air fried. Only thing I would hope for is an accessory second shelf such as the one Philip's makes for their model. Air frying is much more similar to baking in an oven than deep frying. And although most air fryers say you can cook without any oil at all, we found the best results with a tablespoon of vegetable oil. Even then, our top picks produced food that tasted closer to baked fries and chicken than deep-fried food. Instead of the comforting crunch of a fry, we were met with a tough, sometimes chewy exterior. We found the air-fried insides were thicker and more substantial than the almost puffy, creamy texture one gets from a traditional fryer. Hi Jennifer! Great recipe and I’m anxious to try it! I have two air fryers and plan to get a third one. The first one I’m giving my sister to see how she likes air frying even though I still love it. We use them ALL the time and I think once you really get into it you will be saying it is “better” than deep fat frying not to mention the Health benefits .
This Air Fryer is one of the best! I read some reviews of others before buying and I have had no trouble with it at all. I have used it numerous times since getting it for Christmas. Most things you have to shake halfway through as stated in the instructions. Frozen or precooked anything comes out great, except precooked greasy hamburgers. I like it because it removes some of the grease from the frozen items that you cook in it. I am extremely happy with it.!
Unlike the others, the Oster DuraCeramic Air Fryer is round and has a see-through lid, so you can watch what’s cooking. It has a detachable handle that clips on the bowl to remove it after air frying; we found it tricky to use. For cooking items like fries, there’s a mechanism to use the fryer in a tilted position to eliminate the need to shake or toss during cooking. In our cook-off, the Oster took the longest to cook and gave the least crispy results of all we tested.

But after a few trusted colleagues raved about air fryers, I decided to reconsider. At my local home goods store, I eyed the futuristic, egg-shaped appliance with skepticism. Air fryers are basically compact convection ovens that rapidly blow lots of hot air onto food to cook it. I was intrigued but hesitant to commit due to its small capacity. I went home empty handed; I needed a little more convincing.  
While the Krups Fry Delight won’t give you quite as crunchy results as the Philips, it also won’t empty your bank account. We love its square design, which not only looks more attractive but makes it easy to fit in a cabinet. While this is one of the smaller models, it can still hold up to a pound and a half of fries, four chicken pieces, or a pound of meat.
Unlike many other air fryers on the market, this unit solves one big issue: flipping the food over. The inbuilt paddle stirs the food, preventing it from sticking together and making sure the it is cooked evenly. There are some disadvantages to the stirring paddle as well, since cooking delicate foods like fish fries or sweet potatoes may be problematic.

For a price hovering around $100, you definitely get what you pay for.  The accessories are fairly limited but the cooking experience is one of the best we’ve seen, and at the end of the day, that’s the most important factor.  Compared to the following mentioned Phillips model, it’s more than 3 times cheaper and offers the same, if not better cooking ability.  For this reason it deserves to be the best air fryer we have reviewed thus far.

I really liked your recipe ideas and can't wait to try many of them (still not eating Quinoa, lol) like the okra, sweet potatoes and eggplant. I'm also looking forward to trying your recommendation of the baking powder added to my spices for making wings crispy. Thanks so much for that tip! I have recently purchased the Sarki air fryer and put my wings is the bottom pan with the stirring blade in motion. They come out somewhat crispy and they are pretty darn good for not being oil fried. But the really big payoff for me is the reduction of calories.
My husband and I are recently empty nesters and the air fryer idea came to me to help me reduce the amount of food I'm used to preparing for our family. You can only stuck so much in there, right?
Our favorite thing I make in it is chicken tacos. I take a pack of boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut it into bite sized pieces, and put the chicken in a bag with any brand taco seasoning, and also a package of guacamole mix (dry seasoning), about 3/4 of an onion, and some jalapeno chopped up, then adding a small amount of oil just enough to get all the ingredients to blend nicely together. Then I just let that sit in bag inthe fridge all day.
When I'm ready to cook supper, I spray my pan with a little Crisco, pour the prepared chicken yumminess into the bottom pan with the spinner blade (it turns the food the entire time it's cooking so it cooks uniformly) press a few buttons (350-375°) and in about 15 minutes, I've got delicious taco meat ready for a tortilla or shell. Tacos aren't just for Tuesday anymore 😉

As I started to load the chicken in the air fryer basket, I realized I was only going to be able to fit about four pieces into it, maybe five if I squeezed. So, I needed to cook two batches for the same amount of chicken in the air fryer that I could cook in a single batch in the oven. Being that the air fryer only has capacity to prepare food in small quantities, it’s probably better suited for those cooking for 1-2 people. If you happen to be cooking for the masses, you might want to skip the air fryer and head straight to the oven.
